Database overview: About the “Bibliographic Database of Research on Japanese Language and Japanese Language Education”

The “Bibliographic Database of Research on Japanese Language and Japanese Language Education” is a database of material related to Japanese language and Japanese language education. Cataloguing books and articles on these topics that have been published from 1950 to the present, at this point, September 2024, the total number of catalogued items amounts to approximately 290,463 items. As a collection of research materials on specific fields that covers a long span of years, the database, in addition to having bibliographic information on the texts, is characterized by the annotation of information on the field of study which indicates the content of each text. Furthermore, links have been added for accessing the texts of those articles available on the Web through the repositories of universities and other academic institutions, numbering, as of September 2024, a total of about 43,198 links.

1.Types of data and numbers of items

The data catalogued is broadly divided into an Article Database and a Book Database, with the data from the Article Database being further divided into ① Articles from Journals and ② Articles from Collections of papers.

Article Database 240,536 items

Articles from Journals 206,554 items (articles published in academic journals, and university bulletins and serials)

Articles from Collections of papers 33,982 items (individual articles from collections of papers and from proceedings)

Book Database 49,927 items

Total 290,463 items

2.The Scope of the Collection

The data catalogued is collected from the Research Library of the National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics. Almost all of the journals and books catalogued reside in the repository of the Research Library of the National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics (NINJAL), but with regard to those items for which there are no holdings in the Research Library repository, a minus sign (”-”) is entered in the corresponding cell of the “Research Library request number” (「研究図書室請求記号」) column on the “Details screen”. The Research Library intakes yearly 776 journals and bulletins, and 2,477 books, with current holdings as of April 2024 amounting to 5,972 titles for bulletins and journals, and 163,953 books, and 86 e-journals, and 1,418 e-books.
Furthermore, the database has begun to enter articles that have been published for online journals. Data catalogued from online journals is indicated by “OJ” entered in the corresponding cell of the “Research Library request number” (「研究図書室請求記号」)column.

3.About the formation of the database and the data collection

The catalogue reflects the data in the following three journals; the "Japanese Language Studies Annual Survey and Bibliography" 『国語年鑑』(1954-2008), the"Japanese Language Education Annual Survey" 『日本語教育年鑑』(2000-2008), and the"Teaching Japanese as a Second Language: An Index to Journal Articles" 『日本語教育学会誌・機関誌掲載論文等文献一覧』(1980-1998) which were of late published by NINJAL.
Items from the"Japanese Language Studies Annual Survey and Bibliography" are generally works of"Journal,""Collections of papers" (except 1954-1956), and"Book," while items from the two journals on Japanese language education are generally works of"Journal" and"Book".
After the integration of the data from above-mentioned three journals in 2011, we subsequently add newly published items on"Journal,""Collections of papers," and"Book". Please note that while we have both "Keywords" and "Chapter title" fields after the data integration, there are cases where those fields are blank in the former data.
